Navigating Personal Finances as a MEXT Scholarship Student in Japan: My Experience

Study in Japan is fascinating for many of us. but, what's the difficulty with personal finance while in Japan as Student with MEXT Scholarship.

I am giving some of my own experiences from October 2021 to till date about personal finances in Japan as student.

I had almost similar expectations like many others about life in Japan when I started my first trials with MEXT Scholarship applications. Fortunately, the scholarship application was good and I landed safely to start my course after the major pandemic.

  1. First shock: We who came in Oct 2021, end up paying additional 30,000 to 50,000 yen extra for the travel under restrictions and staying in hotel etc. That maybe we leave to the unfortunate global crises, what next..

  2. Started back to study and checked the chores of my life every day in and out, all are going..., slowly started to noticing the scholarship amount and expenses every month.. infact I have recorded all my expenses even very small chocolate to gas bills over a year and realized the minimum expanses will be about 45,000 yen to 55,000 yen for food and misc., stationary travel etc.

  3. What next, found there is no way out but to restrict your aspirations on travel or social gatherings or big shoppings and stuff so you can make it about 25,000 yen to 30,000 yen which is excluding rent and utilities. Also on careful budgeting. So what's on the corner, that still didnt satisfy the urge to explore and adopt things on weekends...so the occasioanl or regular part time jobs comes into picture
